VANCOUVER, Wash., Dec. 8, 2021 -- If you’d rather cuddle up at home with your pet instead of venturing out into the world, you’re not alone. A new Banfield Pet Hospital survey of 1,000 people who got a dog or cat in the past two years found 76% say they prefer spending time with their pet over their partner, friends, or family, nearly 1 in 2 – including 49% of men and 47% of women – admit they focused less on their dating life to spend time at home with their dog or cat in 2021, and 1 in 3 shortened or rescheduled their honeymoon in 2021 to spend less time away from their dog or cat.
Banfield analyzed survey findings alongside data from the practice’s proprietary pet health records database – the largest in the U.S. – to better understand how people are approaching pet ownership two years into the pandemic and what these shifts might mean for the future of pet care. It’s clear the human-animal bond has only gotten stronger, with owners more attentive to their pet’s health than ever before. 95% of respondents made their pet’s veterinary care a priority this year, with 44% admitting their cat or dog has been to more health care visits than they have in the past 12 months.
This is a big jump from the start of the pandemic, with a Banfield survey from May 2020 finding 20% of owners were feeling more committed to taking their pets to the veterinarian for preventive care check-ups compared to pre-pandemic. People are also finding new ways to get the answers about their questions and concerns: Banfield facilitated 320,000 chats on its telehealth service, Vet Chat, helping owners connect with a veterinarian anytime, day or night to get pet care advice and triage support from the comfort of their homes.
With people spending more quality time with their pets, owners might also be getting better at noticing when something is off. When looking at the past two years compared to pre-pandemic, Banfield’s data found a 26% increase in dogs diagnosed with pruritis, or itchy skin – showing owners are committed to getting their pets the care they need.

Additional survey and data insights show how pets are influencing our daily lives – from finding any excuse to spend more quality time with cats and dogs (whether that means cancelling on dates or involving pets in fitness routines) to seeking more veterinary advice and consults through office visits or telehealth apps. The findings detailed below suggest we will continue to see more responsible and pet-obsessed owners going into 2022.
Affectionate and anxious pets
While some pets are loving the extra quality time together – 86% of owners say their pet has become more affectionate in the past 12 months – Banfield is also seeing an increase in pets showing signs of behavioral issues like anxiety.
47% of surveyed owners believe their pet has developed separation anxiety in the past year. Analyzing Banfield’s data, the hospital saw a 45% increase in dogs and a 91% increase in cats showing signs consistent with anxiety/fear since the start of the pandemic.
While quality time with pets is so important, Banfield veterinarians recommend owners talk with their veterinary team to address any behavioral issues and ensure pets are set up for success – so that they’re calm and content whether they’re home alone or hanging with the family. Read more here.
Swiping left to spend more time with our pets
94% said their pet has impacted their social life in some way, with 1 in 5 people saying they met their significant other thanks to being out and about with their pet. Maybe it’s because pets can put us at ease – Mars Petcare’s recent Keeping People and Pets Together Report found more than 6 in 10 (63%) would feel more comfortable at a social gathering if they were able to bring their pets.
Others prefer skipping awkward first dates in favor of nights in with their pets: around 1 in 10 admit to cancelling on a date in the past year because their pet couldn’t come along. . Additional findings include:
- Nearly half of new millennial pet owners (49%) reconsidered who they date based on if their pet liked them (compared to 35% Gen Z)
- For those with wedding bells in their future:51% of people (including 62% of Gen Zers and 49% of millennials) are planning to incorporate their pet in their wedding, and 45% plan to select or change their honeymoon destination so that they can bring their pet
Home is where the pet is
80% of pandemic pet owners say their dog or cat has impacted their living arrangements. According to the survey:
- 25% say they moved in the past year to find a house or apartment that’s better suited for their pet, and 30% plan to move in the next year for the same reason
- 58% of Gen Zers and 62% of millennials have changed their décor or furniture arrangement to better accommodate their pet
Care from the couch
At the end of last year, Banfield predicted telehealth would play an increasingly important role this year in making preventive care accessible to more pets and promoting their health and wellbeing. According to the survey:
- 40% said they have used telehealth services for their pet at least once during the pandemic
- 44% said they have not used telehealth service for their pet but would be interested in using it if offered
- 88% said they’re likely to continue using telehealth services for their pet even if COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease next year
High-tech pets
Last year, Banfield also predicted a rise in popularity of pet devices. According to the survey:
- 49% said they use an in-home camera to check in on their pet while away from home
- 34% said they use video chat technology to check in on their pet while not at home
- 49% said their pet wears an activity / location tracking device
Pets: bringing people together
Pet ownership isn’t always tail wags and purrs, but the human-animal bond can have positive impacts on people and communities. According to the survey, 98% of parents say getting a pet during the pandemic has impacted their family, with 67% saying their kids have learned more responsibility. Additional survey findings include:
- 56% say they spend more time together as a family
- 1 in 2 reveal their kids spend less time with devices, games, and screens since getting a pet
- 47% say they have more of a social life thanks to their pet
- 63% believe walking their pet around the neighborhood has allowed them to get to know their neighbors better
- 40% are partial to their four-legged neighbors, admitting they know the names of more dogs in their neighborhoods than people
Fitness with fido
72% said their pet has helped them stay on track with their wellness goals this year. When asked how:
- 67% said they go on more hikes, runs or walks since getting a pet so they can include them
- 41% picked up running with their dog this year because it was another way to spend time together
- 62% said their families have been more active in general since getting a pet
- Self-care can also include rest: 89% found themselves reading or watching TV more in the past year so they can spend time snuggling with their pet
Research has shown an association between a dog’s activity level and their body condition score, and inactivity is a likely risk factor for the development of overweight and obesity, conditions which affect approximately 40%* of cats and dogs worldwide. "In terms of health benefits, consistent exercise can help to maintain lean muscle mass in dogs which are undergoing weight loss programs, for example. Use of activity trackers may also motivate pet owners to engage in physical activity with their pets more consistently and help them to stay on track with their weight management goals", explains Dr. Tabitha Hookey, Weight Management Specialist from ROYAL CANIN®.

What’s the difference between an OWP and pet insurance?
Insurance is reactive, and an OWP is proactive. In other words, insurance (sometimes) reactively covers treatment for unexpected illness or injury, but OWPs are designed for proactive wellness care. Each OWP is a 12-month package of preventive petcare services, like physical exams and vaccinations, with additional savings on most other Banfield services and products not included in a pet’s OWP.

Pet insurance

Money stuff
How do I pay for my pet's OWP?
Once you confirm enrollment, you have two choices:
- Pay once for a full year, then re-enroll every year (with no enrollment fee if you re-enroll within 90 days of your pet's last OWP).
- Choose a 12-month payment plan with AutoPay, which automatically renews your pet’s OWP each year with no additional enrollment fee.
Either way, we’ll also ask you to authorize a card for Banfield products and services not included in your pet’s OWP package.
When would I pay for services with an OWP?
Your pet’s OWP is a package of high-quality preventive services for wellness. Products or services not included in that package are charged separately, often with an OWP-based discount.
Wait, I get a discount on products and services not in my pet's OWP?
Yes! Your discount is anywhere from 5% to 20% off, depending on your pet’s OWP. This discount applies to most non-OWP Banfield products and services, including parasite control and most medications and prescriptions. (Exceptions include therapeutic diets and PetSmart services or merchandise.)
What’s the schedule for monthly payments?
Your first payment (plus a one-time enrollment fee) is due when you confirm your pet’s enrollment with your Banfield veterinary team. You can set up your remaining payments for the 5th, 12th, 19th, or 26th of the month.

Can I choose any OWP I want?
Because OWPs provide veterinary wellness care, the examining Banfield veterinarian has the sole discretion to confirm your pet's eligibility for any plan, and may recommend a different OWP or options based on your pet's health needs. Puppy and kitten plans can only be confirmed for puppers and kitlings under six months old.
Can I customize my pet’s OWP however I want?
OWPs are package deals. We do offer a number of customizable add-ons, like parasite control and other options,at a discount. Plus, you can even add their cost to your monthly payment plan. Ask your veterinary team about add-on options when you confirm your pet’s OWP at your first appointment.
Can I switch OWPs once I start?
We usually recommend switching when your pet’sOWP package is up for renewal. Talk to your veterinary team to see what makes sense for you and your pet.

How do I enroll my pet?
We’re so glad you asked! You can start to enroll online, call our client help line above, or make an appointment at a Banfield near you. No matter how you start enrollment, you will always confirm your pet’s OWP enrollment and options at your selected Banfield location, so you can be sure you’re getting the right services for your furry friend.

Your quoted OWP price estimates are only valid for 30 days, so we always ask you to make an appointment at your selected Banfield location before that time is up. If you miss your 30-day window, you can start enrollment again at any time.

Yes! OWP members get $15 off each additional pet’s enrollment fee, applied when you confirm their enrollment at your Banfield location.
Why is there a one-time enrollment fee?
The set-up fee covers setting up and establishing your pet’s OWP in our system. You can skip this fee for the next year by either signing up for automatic renewal with monthly payments, or by re-enrolling with full payment within 90 days of your pet’s last OWP.
I started enrollment online, but now I want different choices — how do I change my pet’s OWP?
No worries! Your pet's OWP isn't final until you confirm it at your selected Banfield location. Just bring it up at your first appointment.

No worries. Your enrollment expires if you don’t make an appointment to confirm that enrollment at your Banfield location within 30 days. Your card will not be charged.
My pet has passed away and I have an active OWP. What do I do?
First, we want to say how sorry we are. Losing a pet is tremendously difficult and our hearts go out to you. If you have questions about your pet’s OWP, please call us at 1-888-649-2716.
Because OWPs are a package of discounted veterinary services with payments spread out over 12 months, your pet may have received services with a retail value exceeding the payments you’ve made. If that’s the case, you may have an outstanding balance. Please call us at 1-888-649-2716 with any questions or to cancel your plan.
Can I cancel my pet's OWP at any time?
The short answer is yes, but you may have an outstanding balance.
Because OWPs are a package of discounted veterinary services with payments spread out over 12 months, your pet may have received services with a retail value exceeding the payments you’ve made. If that's the case, you will need to either pay the retail value of those services and discounts used under the OWP less the amount of monthly payments made or make the remaining payments due under the plan — whichever is the least expensive.
